Pet by Akwaeke Emezi
The dystopian fantasy world Emezi creates in “Pet” is one you’ve hoped and longed for, yet may not be as perfect as it seems? In this story, a progressive, artistic, abolitionist, community-centered society is harboring a monster, and Jam - a trans teen - may be the only one who can save it; with the help of a painting-turned-angel (?) - monster (?) - you have to read to find out. What I loved most about this book was the incredible role model Jam provides - someone who strives for justice, healing, and care even when she is being silenced from every direction. (TW: child abuse)
